Societal Impact

According to recent studies [IVT 2004IVT (2004), IVT im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Verkehr, Bau- und Wohnungswesen, Bonn: Analyse von Änderungen des Mobilitätsverhaltens – insbesondere der PKW-Fahrleistung – als Reaktion auf geänderte Kraftstoffpreise, 2004, Fischer 2010Fischer, R. (2009): The electrification of the powertrain – from Turbohybrid to Range Extender. In: 30. Wiener Motorensymposium 7.–8.Mai 2009, Band 2, S. 1–23], 95% of single trips do not exceed 50km. Thus, the market share of small electric vehicles will be very high. However, some trips will exceed a 50km range. Especially those trips between 100 and 200km trips are the ones which are most inconvenient to do with public transportation since they involve travelling with a lot of baggage or in rural areas and often with many passengers in the car. Medium size electric vehicles with range extender are the preferred car for this application.

The SuperLIB addresses exactly the above mentioned applications and will provide an advanced and sustainable technology. Due to the high reliability of the dual-cell battery the consumers will accept these EVs very fast and thus the market will grow. The Figure beneath gives an overview about expected EV sales until 2050. The small electric vehicles and medium size vehicles with range extenders will play a very significant role over the next few decades.

SuperLIB is designed to remove most of the barriers for potential customers of sub-compact passenger cars and light duty commercial vehicles by developing solutions for battery electric vehicles – at competitive price levels* – being zero emission vehicles in city driving, yet capable of longer driving distances now and then.

For commercial electric vehicles Volvo alone will expect a market size of hundreds of buses and thousands of city distribution trucks per year by 2020. The reason for focussing also on this particular segment is the expected dramatic increase of freight transport inside high concentration urban areas during the next decade. For its specific mission profile this kind of vehicle can, of course, get the maximum benefit from the electric driving mode (noise, vibration, pollution, frequent stop&start situations) while the range extender approach will supply a higher flexibility in terms of fleet management.
